Advocates for Barrett Community meet with executives of West Moreton HHS and Dr Stephen Stathis (CHQ) to ensure that an inpatient extended service will be available on the closure of Barrett (Document provided to CHQ, WMHHS and Health Minister.) Dr Stathis states that there will be Tier 3 facility with access to schooling. A commitment by WMHHS and CHQ is made for better communication with families/carers and patients.

11 September 2013

Advocates for Barrett Community meet with Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Lesley van Schoubroek to stress the high risk nature of the Barrett young people’s mental health conditions (particularly with the standing aside of a key clinician the previous night) and the need for flexibility in the closure timeline. (Document provided to MHC and Health Minister.) The Commissioner indicates she is yet to read the ECRG report but she will pass on concerns to Health Minister.

Barrett parent goes to Commission for Children Young People and Child Guardian (CCYPCG) who note her concerns and, already aware of the pending closure, agree to look further into the situation.

4 November 2013

Two Barrett parents present to the Statewide Adolescent Extended Treatment and Rehabilitation Strategy (SW AETRS) Steering Committee on what is required in future services.

December 2013

Education Queensland confirms that Barrett School will relocate temporarily to Yeronga State High School to provide educational services for young people able to access the site from other residential options.

11 December 2013

Proposed new model of care presented to Barrett families by CHQ – Dr Stephen Stathis/Dr Leanne Geppert. This includes a Tier 3 facility. CHQ website also outlines the plans.

January 2014

Final patients moved from Barrett to alternate service options – the centre is officially closed.

1 April 2014

CHQ updates proposed model of care on website to no longer include Tier 3 facility.

DG Health, Ian Maynard meets with Barrett parents following lobbying from supporters to do so. Parents request a multidisciplinary review into care arrangements for former Barrett patients; access to adolescent acute service for young people over 18 years deemed in need by clinical assessment; and a wider range of support for parents.
